  • What is sport psychology?
Sport psychology is a science focused on the psychological aspects of sport performance and wellbeing. It looks at the interactions between the mind of the athlete and their sporting performance. Sport psychology can help athletes to understand how their mind works and how it may impact their sports performance. Athletes need to prepare for and manage the demands of their sporting environment. Sport psychology can provide support in doing this. Demands might include keeping motivation up, managing nerves, communicating effectively, or finding a balance between sport, work/education, and well-being. Our general well-being and factors outside of sport also impact on performance, therefore it is really important to account for these areas too! Sessions are just as much aimed at optimising the psychological well-being of the athlete as they are facilitating performance. Help from a sport psychologist can lead to: - Learning new psychological skills - Understanding how thought processes impact performance - Optimising psychological approaches to performance - Opportunities to think and reflect
  • What does a sport psychologist do?
A sport psychologist may work with individual athletes, teams, coaches, officials, or parents/carers of sports people. Some athletes may actively seek out this service to enhance or maintain their sporting performance, whilst others may wish to work on a specific, performance-related demand. Such demands might include an injury, career transition, or coping with performance anxiety. My one-to-one sessions are typically discussion based, during which individuals will have the chance to reflect, develop a greater self-awareness and work towards their goals. Sessions particularly focus on existing strengths and help athletes to explore solutions to current challenges. My aim as a practitioner is to provide a safe and supportive space to enable you to work on the areas most important to you. My work with sports organisations/clubs has involved exploration and development of values, and working with coaches to support a healthy performance environment.
  • Qualifications to look out for
When looking for psychological support for your performance, consider the qualifications of the practitioner. The title ‘Sport and Exercise Psychologist’ is protected within the UK and therefore you can be assured that these practitioners have met the training standards and requirements of their education provider. I would recommend checking whether the practitioner is HCPC registered or training towards this.
  • Where do sessions take place?
Sport Psychologists will typically work in environments to accommodate the needs of the athlete. Therefore, sessions may take place in a confidential space (in person or online) or within the sporting environment. This is something we can decide together. My consultancy is based in Devon, however work can be carried out around the South West of England and beyond.
  • How much will sessions cost?
An initial 20 minute chat is free of charge. This is an opportunity to discuss your best hopes for working together and ask any questions you may have. This session is for you to decide whether you would like to work with me and for me to ensure I am the best person to support you. One-to-one sessions (lasting up to 60mins) are pay as you go. Please enquire about prices. Group workshops and organisational support will be tailored to your needs. If you would like to discuss needs and prices, please make contact.
  • How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions will vary, depending on your needs. I have worked with athletes in the following ways: - Season or long-term support on a weekly/monthly basis - Fewer sessions for specific challenges - More intensive work leading up to an event
  • How is my data handled and stored?
I adhere to the British Psychological Society’s Code of Ethics (please see https://www.bps.org.uk/news-and-policy/bps-code-ethics-and-conduct for further information). This Code of Ethics involves keeping confidentiality and maintaining best practice. You will be provided with a data protection policy prior to commencement of sessions, so you know your data will be stored safely and ethically. I have professional insurance and a full enhanced disclosure (DBS check).
